Overview

Organizing, Analysis & Editing 22/03 – 9/04

Upon return, students immediately initiate an intense series of modules on selecting, sequencing, editing, theory, and output during a two-weeks pop-up field school. This Organizing, Analysis, & Editing (OAE) workshop serves as an intensive transition from the accumulation of data through the various audio-visual modalities utilized while conducting field research to a process of working effectively and efficiently with these materials to draw out analytical patterns for the production of a multimodal thesis. The online lectures and in-class seminar sessions will mentor students through this process.

The editing assignments (REELS) and Soup Group sessions will center on the production of a series of select-reels (aka sequences) of roughly assembled footage. These selections are a necessary step in both intimately familiarizing oneself with the content of the data and steadily reducing the materials being considered. This dual process enacts a form of analysis on two levels. First, on a micro scale, students begin to identify the most poignant and pertinent materials, which work to highlight the main features of their research inquiry. Second, on a macro scale, by repeatedly working through the materials in an effort to reduce the quantity, students begin to identify recurring patterns of significance that will provide analytical and narrative coherence. Students should follow the guidelines outlined in the step-by-step Process page. It is advisable to read through these steps thoroughly to get an overview of the path ahead.

As such, it is crucial to forestall the impulse to prematurely begin tightly editing scenes based on preconceptions. Students should make note of such potential scenes as they may provide an intuitive insight that may get lost later, but for the overall management of time and data it is best to put these on the back burner until you have a better grasp of the available ingredients.

Following the OAE workshop, the Thesis Seminar will support students as they begin to formulate and rehearse their ethnographic arguments through strategies of remix and scene construction.
