Scholarly Review & Key Concepts
(800-1000 words)
Discuss or answer the following questions:
The aim of this assignment is to develop an insight in the academic debate to which you aim to contribute, with the driving question: What is the analytical relevance of this literature for my research topic? In preparation, review in Brightspace the Thesis Proposal guidelines (under General Information > Information Master Programme). See the Style Guide for proper citation formatting. Also, for two very strong examples, see the Sample Proposals (separate tab in Brightspace) by Shirley van der Maarel and Lenneke Sipkes. Elements from their RPA3 are shared in the template document.
- Analytical Concepts: Identify a list of concepts and themes relevant to your project topic. Research the academic usage and debates around these concepts. (10-15 terms)
- Key Concepts: Prioritize 3 key concepts from part 1 and describe why it is relevant for your topic and how it helps you understand the circumstances around your topic better. How do the 3 concepts relate to one another? (200-300 words)
- Literature Review: For the 3 key concepts write a short literature review (300-500 words) that situates these ideas within a scholarly conversation (each review should reference 3-5 sources).
- Relevance: Write a concluding paragraph for each key concept that identifies its relevance for your project and how you will use these terms. Mention at least one variable in each text that you will also investigate.
