Visual Ethnography in Process

The Visual Ethnography in Process portion of this online coursebook encompasses the second phase of the master’s program. This is where you pull together all the skills and ideas you’ve developed in the first phase of the program into a final proposal, which serves as the basis for an intensive period of independent field research, and concludes with a period of data management and analysis. To support this process, we provide transition workshops at the front and back end of this period. While in the field conducting research, each student will complete three field reports and submit these to their supervisor for feedback.

Timeline

  • The Field Preparations workshop combines two full days (1 & 8 December) for training and critical feedback at the beginning of December.
  • Field Research spans eleven total weeks beginning during the second week in January. During the 11th and final week (15-19 March), the student should commit to organizing and logging all their data.
  • The Organizing, Editing & Analysis workshop is an intensive 2,5-week program (22 March – 6 April) designed for transitioning from data collection/production to data analysis and lays the groundwork for developing the thesis during the third phase.
