Field Preparations is a one-week intensive workshop that begins with students presenting their multimodal portfolio and research agendas for open feedback. Then students conclude the Research Design series of multimodal lessons and field study assignments with a final module that begins with an intensive day of training. We mentor students to show deep intention in their methodological practice, sincere rapport in their social interactions, and critical reflexivity of themselves as ethnographers.

The Thinking with a Camera module challenges students to bring all their training together in a short ethnographic video designed to mimic their thesis recordings. Students prepare a film plan, spend one day shooting, one day assembling, and a final day sharing with the class. Following a one-on-one meeting with their supervisor, students finalize their proposals and prepare for departure.
